I’m sure you’ve noticed….facial and body oils, everywhere. At first there were a few, now it seems every company, even some I’ve never heard of, all have facial oils. There was a time…and not so long ago either…that many women would recoil in horror at the idea of putting…shudder….OIL…on their skin that was already thought to be oily. Add more? Not in this lifetime. But things change.
Facial oils contain more than just oil…they contain fatty acids and natural antioxidants that can help protect the skin from aging and the environment…but there sooooo many out there, it’s dizzying. I started using facial oils maybe a year ago….here are a few I have used and liked (and didn’t bankrupt me which I love).
The first to seduce me was from Kiehls…Midnight Recovery Concentrate. Honestly, anything that even alludes to a good night’s sleep will catch my attention, and with Lavender Essential Oil, Evening Primrose Oil (both linked to sleep), and Squalane (from olives) , I was willing to give it a try. While it felt a bit foreign, putting oil on my face, it quickly absorbs and leaves the skin feeling smooth and wonderful. The lavender is incredibly soothing and delicious smelling, so makes it a great nighttime choice.
Grown Alchemist’s Antioxident Facial Oil with Rose Hip and Camellia Seed is a luxurious, organic oil that contains polyphenols from the rose hips, and powerful Omega 3, 6 and 9 from the Camellia seed. Over time, this oil is supposed to “noticeably soften and visibly increase skin smoothness”, as well as improve skin elasticity. I’m all for that…though recently I dropped my little glass bottle of this oil on the tile floor of a Brooklyn Airbnb. Let me tell you that was a sad morning.
Care for some Bee Propolis on your skin? Propolis is the sticky substance collected from flowers and leaf buds by the bees, and used to coat the interior of the hive for self defense. It’s a natural disinfectant, and provides antioxidents for the bees…and can offer similar qualities for the skin. Vernal makes organic Bee-Radiant Booster Oil, with sumac, Propolis and rosehip.
I’ve become a huge fan of the small Asheville NC company of Privai. Their products are all botanically based….and I love their lotions! With several facial oils to choose from, my fave so far is the Nourishing Face and Body Oil (they also have clarifying and anti-aging). Ingredients include carrot oil, lavender, French cypress, and geranium oil. The smell is delightful, and after I wash my face and apply a few drops….my skin looks and feels incredibly glowing.
If you’d like to try a facial oil without spending over $20….this one’s for you! Burt’s Bees has caught the oil train…and there’s is without a doubt, a bargain. Containing rosehip, jojoba and Evening Primrose, this oil delivers a lot for a little….in fact, I’m ordering a bottle. I’ve never personally used it, but I like the company and their products. And the ingredients look spot on.
Here’s another tip: after reading scads of ingredient lists for a variety of facial oils, from the extravagant to the modest…I decided to add a couple of drops of their ingredients to the facial oils I already have… using the essential oils in my cabinet!
A few drops of Frankincense, tea tree oil, lavender…all good for the skin….make your own custom blend! But only a few drops…a little goes a long way in the world of essential oils!
